Aimed at replacing fallen trees, making the earth safer and improving the climate, Rivers State chapter of the Nigerian Library Association under the leadership of Dr Chidaka Nyemezu, in collaboration with Sustainable Actions for Nature (SAN) carried out a tree-planting exercise tagged Library Tree Canopy Initiative program.
The eco-friendly event took place on Tuesday, September 19, 2023 at the Rivers State University Central Library. The event had in attendance the school’s leadership, the Ministry of Forestry, NGOs, and individual climate change enthusiasts.
In her welcome address, Professor Jennifer Ngozi Igwela, the Rivers State University Library Director emphasised the importance of tree planting and encouraged guests to join in the effort to save our planet. She promised to carry out the campaign on all campuses of the school.
Dr. Grace Alawa, Executive Director of Sustainable Actions for Nature represented by Dr Nkemdirim E. Odoya, the Director, Rivers State Ministry of Forestry highlighted some benefits of trees, such as medicinal purposes, aesthetic values, construction, and landmark purposes.
She further urged everyone to commit to the noble act of tree planting.
Representing the Vice Chancellor, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Admin, Prof. Valentine Omubo Pepple expressed appreciation for the collaboration and applauded the gestures of the Nigerian Library Association and Sustainable Actions for Nature. He asked that the benefactors put in place sustainability plans for the project. The DVC Admin also proposed extending the initiative to other campuses.
As a climate change enthusiast, while buttressing the relevance of tree planting, Prof. Pepple encouraged everyone present to stay committed to this cause.
Highlight of the event was the tree presentation to and planting by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor. He entrusted the tree to the library and charged them with ensuring its proper nurturing so that it can serve its purpose in the near future.
